The role of CMRITO (the College) is to regulate the profession of medical radiation and imaging technology to serve and protect the public interest. One of the ways the College meets its mission is by establishing and enforcing standards of practice for medical radiation and imaging technologists. These set out expectations of CMRITO registrants. The Standards of Practice provides a framework of the College’s practice expectations. It’s comprised of three areas:
Our Standards of Practice set out minimum standards of professional practice and conduct for College registrants. They assist registrants in understanding expectations for the professional practice of medical radiation and imaging technology. They help registrants to make appropriate decisions regarding management of the practice of College registrants and in developing suitable policies and procedures. They assist educators in developing curriculum and in providing appropriate instruction. They also help the public in assessing quality of care.
The Standards of Practice are used to determine whether registrants have maintained appropriate standards of practice and conduct. They are used by the College’s committees in making determinations regarding professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity. They are also used for other CMRITO processes such as setting entry-level requirements for registration, and are the basis for our Quality Assurance Program.
These Standards of Practice came into effect on January 1, 2018 following an extensive and comprehensive consultation process.
In the Standards of Practice there are references to the Code of Ethics for registrants of CMRITO. The Standards of Practice should be used in conjunction with the Code of Ethics. Together these documents provide a model for assuring safe, effective, and ethical outcomes for patients.

CMRITO registrants must understand, and adhere to, both legislation and regulations governing the practice of the profession. The regulations made under the Medical Radiation and Imaging Technology Act (MRIT Act), to which registrants must adhere include:

b. made under the Regulated Health Professions Act
Registrants are authorized to apply soundwaves for diagnostic ultrasound examinations under an exemption set out in the Controlled Acts regulation made under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).

The Standards of Practice refer to the by-laws of the College. The current version of the by-laws can be found in the Legislation section of the website.
In addition, the College publishes a series of documents entitled "What you must know about ...". These documents are companion documents to support standards that may require additional interpretation or guidance on the College’s practice expectations.
