The CMRITO operates under two pieces of provincial legislation: the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and the Medical Radiation and Imaging Technology Act, 2017 (MRIT Act).
These links are separated into two sections: the legislation and the regulations made under those legislations. The by-laws of the CMRITO are provided under a third section.
The CMRITO’s primary goal is to regulate the practice of medical radiation and imaging technologists to serve and protect the public interest. We implement any changes in legislation passed by government, and we develop and implement our own by-laws and policies to support the practice of medical radiation and imaging technologists, and the operations of CMRITO.
Policy development is shaped by government legislation and by trends or issues that may have an impact on the regulation of medical radiation and imaging technologists. Council considers, and ultimately approves, all CMRITO regulations and by-laws. First it consults with its registrants and stakeholders when developing and reviewing regulations and by-laws.
All by-laws and policies are reviewed on a regular basis by Council, which is comprised of professional registrants and public members. A regular policy review cycle ensures policies remain relevant, accurate, and reflective of current expectations.
The Medical Radiation and Imaging Technology Act, 2017 (MRIT Act) and the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) determine how the medical radiation and imaging technology profession is regulated in Ontario.
Regulations that govern the practice of medical radiation and imaging technology are made under the RHPA and the MRIT Act.
The CMRITO’s by-law contains the rules that govern how we operate. Council makes the by-laws which are related to the governance, administration and regulatory functions under existing provincial legislation.
CMRITO policies outline specific guidance on issues within the College, of the profession, and MRIT's practice. They also reflect relevant legal requirements found in legislation, regulation and by-laws.
