Approved Examinations


CAMRT National Certification Examination 

The only written examinations approved by the CMRITO for radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and magnetic resonance are the national certification examinations of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). 

Applicants must receive approval from CMRITO to write the CAMRT examination. Once the Registration Committee has issued their Decision, Order and Reasons and have determined that you are eligible to write this examination, the CMRITO will advise the CAMRT that you are approved to write the examination and provide them with your contact information. CAMRT Examination preparation tools

The CAMRT website includes a variety of tools to help applicants prepare for the CAMRT examination: 

  • Competency Profiles explain what is expected from MRITs in each specialty, identifying the tasks that they must be able to perform to provide safe, effective and ethical patient care in a variety of work environments. The competency profiles describe the outcome required for entry-to-practice and provides the foundation for development of the exam blueprint
  • Exam Blueprints outline the key components of the certification exam, including specific clinical principles and imaging procedures that will be evaluated
  • Examination preparation courses CAMRT offers three online exam preparation courses for purchase to help internationally educated medical radiation technologists (IEMRTs) prepare for the national certification exam
  • Canadian Practice in Medical Radiation Technology The purpose of this module is to provide information about practice in medical radiation technology in a Canadian healthcare environment. The module discusses regulation, professional practice, patient and MRT safety, diversity, the importance of effective communication and the value of CAMRT membership.

Sonography Canada National Examinations 

The only CMRITO-approved written examinations for the specialty of diagnostic medical sonography are the national certification examinations of Sonography Canada. 

Applicants must receive approval from CMRITO to write the Sonography Canada examinations. Once the Registration Committee has issued their Decision, Order and Reasons and have determined that you are eligible to write these examinations, the CMRITO will advise Sonography Canada  that you are approved to write the examinations and provide them with your contact information. Sonography Canada Examination preparation tools

The Sonography Canada website includes a number of tools to help applicants prepare for the Sonography Canada examinations: 

  • National Competency Profile (NCP) explains what is expected from MRITs in each specialty, identifying the tasks that they must be able to perform to provide safe, effective and ethical patient care in a variety of work environments. The competency profiles describe the outcome required for entry-to-practice and provides the foundation for development of the exam blueprint
  • The exam blueprints and suggested reference material outline what material is covered on the core, generalist, cardiac and vascular examinations, and provide links to reference material for each examination
  • Candidate Guide provides candidates for the national certification examinations with information on exam eligibility, the application process, exam administration and delivery, scoring of exams and suggested preparation for candidates.
  • Practice Examination courses Sonography Canada offers practice examinations for purchase that provide a sampling of questions and content that may appear on the certification exams


Bridging Programs

Bridging programs are specialized educational programs designed to "bridge" your international training and experience with access to the supports you need to practice your profession in Ontario. These programs are voluntary, so applicants are not required to take them. However, you may find parts of them helpful, whether you intend to complete the requirements for registration now or in the future. Currently, the Michener Institute of Education at UHN’s programs are only available to landed immigrants. The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) program courses are delivered online.
Canadian Health Care System, Culture and Context for Internationally Educated Healthcare Professionals

The Michener Institute of Education at UHN Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Radiological Technologists
This program has been specifically designed to help prepare internationally educated medical radiation technologists for the national certification examination. In this intensive, fifteen (15) week course, you will review core theory components and obtain thorough preparation to write the CAMRT certification exam. The Michener Institute of Education at UHN Ultrasound Scanning Evaluation Bridging Program 
The Ultrasound Scanning Evaluation Bridging Program provides an overview of the scanning protocols and procedures, as well as the core skills required for Sonography Canada’s “Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment” (CCSA). Graduates of this program will have an understanding of scanning techniques, protocols, and the necessary patient care skills to practice safely in Canada. Click here to view a brochure about the Ultrasound Scanning Evaluation Bridging Program. 

Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Medical Radiological Technology Bridging 
The NAIT MRT Bridging program offers a flexible online course of study to help you gain the knowledge and skills expected of radiographers in Canada. This program is not intended for basic entry-level training or to be a full review program. It will help you apply your existing education to Canadian standards and help you write the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) examination.

  • HealthForceOntario online webinar: Competencies, Culture, Communication and Integration provides a brief understanding of the Canadian health care system, including principles, roles of federal and provincial governments, level of care, importance of patient-centered and culturally competent care, ethical practice, interprofessional collaboration, and effective communication.
